Telecoms industry discuss future mobile trends
At a breakfast seminar today in IBEC offices, Dublin, the Telecommunications and Internet Federation (TIF), the IBEC group that represents the telecoms industry, highlighted the current and expected future trends in the mobile sector.
Speaking at the seminar, TIF director Tommy McCabe said: “Mobile phones are no longer just a device for communication, the latest smartphones allow consumers access to a wide range of multimedia services and applications. Trends show that the consumer will continue to demand new and innovative mobile applications such as interactive TV, mobile video blogging, advanced games and mobile payments.
Addressing the seminar Stephen Shurrock, Chief Executive - Telefonica Ireland, which operates the O2 brand in Ireland, said, “Customers are increasingly on a journey towards a total digital life, driven largely by the increased adoption of smartphones. It has been predicted that by 2013, more people will access the internet through mobile devices than on PC’s. The telecoms industry has a key role to play in aiding this journey, both by giving customers the confidence to use more data on mobile devices, but also through the innovative delivery of new technologies and services.”
“Consumers demand to live a truly integrated digital life where m-banking, m-government, m-health, shopping, entertainment services can all be performed using your mobile phone and can easily move between platforms. The Mobile Wallet, which is still in its infancy for making payments for services such as parking and tolls are increasing in popularity. A key trend for the future is Near Field Communications NFC, which enable smartphone users to easily make payments in stores or receive information about a local business via an NFC window sticker. “
Marius Smyth Head of Mobile, Google EMEA in his presentation entitled “ It is not too late to be early in Mobile “said “The Mobile web is now in the hands of over 1 billion people world wide and with over 400k Android devices alone being activated every day, business owners must develop an effective mobile strategy. By 2015, it is estimated that over 75% of all mobile phones will be smart phones. If you sell products or promote services online, then your phone should have a site for smartphone browsers. Smartphones provide a new means of communicating and engaging with your customers.”
